Sitting outside the University of Michigan's East Quadrangle hall Tuesday, John Trummer III shook from the frigid cold as he struggled to enjoy an afternoon smoke. Bundled in coat, hat and gloves, the U-M sophomore took a few quick puffs and headed for warmth.

I suppose the one mitigating factor here is that it provides young people with irrefutable evidence that the left is about usurping personal freedom by those who "know what's better for them".

As an Alumni from the 70's I must ask,
Can you still smoke a joint?

I wonder if this ban applies only to tobacco or to marijuana as well. When I lived in East Quad in the mid-80s, smokers of pot far outnumbered those of tobacco. Heck, I think the clove cigarette smokers outnumbered the tobacco cigarette smokers.

The City of Ann Arbor has a $25 fine for possession, however the University is governed by State law: $2000 fine and one year in jail.

I recall visiting a classroom at the University of Iowa while still in high school in the mid 1960's--several of the students smoked in class while listening to the lecture. I thought that was SO COOL !
